Reynolds students take 1st-place in local architecture design competition

Congratulations to Reynolds students Michael Abbot, Tom Walsh, Bruno Souza, Jamerson Seay and Ceara Chambers as they earned 1st-place in the Student Category at the recent AIA Branch House In-fill Design competition. The students who also won 3rd-place overall against licensed professional designers, were part of Architectural & Engineering Technology Program Head Wen Andrews’ ARC 299 class.

“The students did a great job competing against other students and even some design professionals in the Richmond area,” said Andrews. “This just shows the dynamic programs and students we have here at Reynolds and just shows that when our students put their minds to it, they are as good as anyone out there. I am really proud of them.”

The competition addressed the challenges of creating a new building on a vacant lot within Jackson Ward or Union Hill, historic districts within Richmond. A jury, composed of a group of architects and design professionals, gave consideration to issues like historic context, sustainability, affordability, and the neighborhood's own unique sense of place.
