JSRCC’s Goochland Campus responded to Governor McDonnell’s call for a Day of Service by participating in Goochland’s Free Clinic and Family Services Food Drive. Rather than serving fellow citizens for just one day, food was collected from September 10th through September 28th.
Assistant Dean of the School of Business Chuck Swaim contacted the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services and secured posters and bags for food collection. Karen Gentry from the Student Success Center strategically located the posters and empty bags around campus and was instrumental in encouraging students, staff, and faculty to participate. She reports that generous JSRCC students would pick up an empty bag, take it home and return the next day to drop off a bag full of grocery items.
Chuck Swaim noted, “It was our most successful food collection on-campus in recent memory with 248 pounds of groceries collected.”
After the food was delivered to Sally Graham, Executive Director of Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services remarked, “The total for JSR was 248 pounds! Thank you so much for your help and support. We collected over 14,500 lbs. of food and are still counting. This has been even more successful than we imagined.”
