Haiti dance troupe draws large crowd

Drums were beating, dancers were soaring, and spirits were lifted as the Richmond Boys Choir and the Resurrection Dance Theater of Haiti mesmerized nearly 200 guests in a recent performance at the Lipman Auditorium.

Hosted by the Multicultural Enrichment Council (MEC), the event raised $2,000 to support Hearts with Haiti, a nonprofit organization that is helping to rebuild the St. Joseph’s Home for Boys—an orphanage for former child slaves and homeless boys that was destroyed in the 2010 earthquake.

Laurie Weinberg, chair of the MEC, said she could not stay in her seat during the performance. “ I watched in awe as these young men so artistically and athletically reenacted their difficult lives as former street children and orphans.  Like so many others in the audience, I was inspired to contribute to the cause so that the lives of young children in Haiti can be improved. I want to thank the members of our JSRCC “family” who turned out in large numbers for the moving performance. ”
