Reynolds "springs into action" for local hospitalized veterans

During the month of April the Professional and Administrative Faculty Senate sponsored a "Spring into action for our veterans" drive to gather toiletries and clothing items for veterans residing at the McGuire Veterans Medical Center in Richmond.

The effort was a resounding success, with 1,800 items collected and delivered to the hospital on Monday, May 5.  Toiletry items collected include brushes, combs, lotions, denture cleaner, lip balm, toothpaste, mouthwash, shampoo, toothbrushes, deodorant, floss, conditioner, shaving cream, razors, soap, and tissues.  Clothing items collected include socks, t-shirts, underwear and shoe laces. 

The Goochland Campus led the three campuses in the collection of donations, but it is clear from the large number of items donated that the entire college community appreciated the opportunity to show their gratitude and express their appreciation to the hospitalized veterans.

Carol Rodi noted, "The Professional and Administrative Faculty Senate was proud to sponsor the second annual 'Spring Into Action for Veterans.'  This drive is aimed at supplying our hospitalized veterans with items that are sorely needed, but that the hospital does not stock. This year, we tripled our goal with 15 boxes of 1800 separate items collected. Thanks to all who participated."

Student Art Show Award Winners

Excitement was in the air the evening of Thursday, April 24 as a large group of art enthusiasts gathered in the Gallery of Georgiadis Hall on the Parham Road Campus to celebrate the artistic talents and accomplishments of Reynolds students as the winners of the 2014 Student Art Show were announced.  Every spring the walls of the Gallery are transformed into an art gallery for the Student Art Show, displaying creative works in all shapes and sizes.  This year 68 individual works of art were on display.   The artwork included paintings, drawings, photographs and digital art. 

In front of an audience composed of students, parents, faculty, staff, and community members the following winners were announced:

Nursing Pinning Ceremony

Reynolds recently recognized 35 students who completed the Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing. Held in the Lipman Auditorium of the Massey Library Technology Center, the ceremony opened with a welcome by President Dr. Gary Rhodes and inspirational words by nursing retention specialist Carol Rodi, MSN, RN.

“I know you are going to do a wonderful job in the profession and will make J. Sargeant Reynolds proud,” said Rodi. “It is now time for you to get out there and make things better.”

After sharing with the students what she expects they will see in the future as a nurses, Rodi also challenged the students not only to try new adventures in the profession, but to be someone that gets things done.

“Nursing is an art and a science,” added Rodi. “You are going to use your whole self in nursing. You are the gentle hand and the caring heart. The voice that comforts. You are the eyes that will see pain and despair. The supporting back and the legs to run get things when the patient can’t. You are the last voice, the last touch, the last human contact that many people will have on this earth. This is nursing. This is who you are.”

After the award presentations, the graduates recited the Nurses’ Pledge. The Reynolds’ Nursing Program is designed to prepare its students to participate as collaborative members of nursing care teams and to provide direct care to patients in a variety of health service facilities and agencies. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, students are eligible to take the licensing examination to become Registered Nurses.

Reynolds celebrates 41st Commencement

Reynolds Community College recently awarded over 1,700 degrees and certificates at its 41st Commencement on Sunday, May 11.  Reynolds has one formal commencement ceremony each year after the spring semester for students completing certificate or Associate Degree curricula throughout the academic year.

Virginia Secretary of Education Anne Holton delivered the commencement speech highlighting first generation college graduates, those who worked full-time while they were studying at Reynolds, and those who were parenting or providing for another loved one while going to college.

“Seeing the faces of our graduates and the enthusiasm of their families is always one of my personal favorite moments of the year,” noted Reynolds President Gary Rhodes.

Tiwana Simon addressing the audience represented the graduates and challenged them to go out and make a difference in the world and to live out their dreams. Simon will be attending Old Dominion University in the fall.
